ARIZONA HUNT UNIT 1 - NOW AVAILABLE!
Hunt Unit 1 offers a variety of high-country terrain primarily containing the Canadian and Hudsonian Life zones. The Canadian offers meadows, ponderosa pines, douglas and white Firs, along with quaking aspens. The Hudsonian is filled with engelmann and blue spruce, alpine fir, along with some bristlecone pine.
This highly prized unit lies almost entirely inside the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest and contains small pockets of private and State land as well.
Unit 1 offers trophy big game hunting for elk, mule deer, whitetail, pronghorn antelope, and Rocky Mountain sheep, andzzzz also offers ideal hunting for hunting for black bear, mountain lion, and turkey. Furthermore, great opportunities for small game such as bobcat, coyote, fox, cottontail rabbit, squirrel and more are available to hunters.
Because of its numerous high-country lakes systems, this area provides optimal opportunities for waterfowl and fishing. Waterfowl species abound throughout this unit which include: geese, mallards, mergansers, blue winged teal, northern pintail, gadwall, widgeon, redheads, canvasback, ringnecks, and more. Game-fish species in the high-country lakes, rivers and streams include rainbow trout, brown trout, brook trout, and the prized Native Apache Trout.
Unit 1 is loaded with hundreds of miles with scenic hiking. For example, the Mount Baldy Wilderness offers many trails along one of Arizona’s highest peaks at 11,421 ft. Also, during the winter, the near-by Sunrise Park Resort provides downhill ski runs. Other winter recreation includes cross country skiing, snow shoeing, and snowmobiling. During the summer months, the ski park transforms to offer summer activities such as: mounting biking trails, air bag jump, super slide, bungee jumping, a rock wall, archery, disc golf hiking, kayaking, canoeing, fishing and more.
Due to the primitive nature of the roads combined with weather conditions, access demands 4x4 off road vehicles in order to safely venture throughout the unit. Please be mindful that there are numerous reasons why some road restrictions exist within National Forests. Please be mindful and respect the protection given to the land and resources by these closures and restrictions.
Public lands are subject to leasing and other changes. It is advised to obtain local and forestry information from a Forest Service office or other public land agency. Contact the appropriate land management agency for the most current information.
