The Sonoran Desert is known for its unique cactus and the majestic saguaro, living well over 200 years, is but one species found in this terrain. Other cacti species include: the barrel, cholla, prickly pear, hedgehog, ocotillo and many more. Its unique trees include the palo verde, ironwood, mesquite, and acacia, all of which help to support food and habitat for this Unit’s wildlife.
In 1863 the famed Bradshaw Mountains became the home to the Arizona gold rush which helped develop Arizona’s stature in the great Southwest. Since then, these magnificent mountains have yielded over 15 million ounces of gold! Shortly after the start of the gold boom the word got out that Arizona was rich, not just in gold but silver, copper and much more. The enormous growth in the mining industry is what pushed Arizona into becoming United States Territory which eventually led to its statehood in 1912. This Unit contains hundreds of abandoned mines as well as working mines that still produce large amounts of gold, silver, copper, and other precious minerals.
Hunting Unit 20B offers good opportunities for big game such as mule deer and mountain lion and is home to some of the best javelina populations in Arizona. Not to be overlooked is the excellent variety of small game such as rabbit, fox, coyote, bobcat, and more. Bird hunting is also abundant with dove, quail and various waterfowl that migrate to Lake Pleasant. Non-game animals are numerous as well as unique species of bats, birds, reptiles, and insects.
This popular unit also harbors Lake Pleasant that offers terrific fishing. These fish species include largemouth bass, striped bass, channel catfish, crappie and other sunfish. Lake Pleasant harbors a large marina which is a magnet for boating, jet skiing, camping and other outdoor activities.
For the hiker, Unit 20B contains three wilderness areas: Castle Creek, Hells Canyon, and the Hassyampa River Canyon. Each wilderness area provides endless trails and scenic hiking. Other popular hikes are located throughout the Wickenburg Mountains and of course the historic Black Canyon Trail may be the most notable; extending from the southeast, running through the northeastern portion of the Unit.
Hunt Unit 20B is huge for 4x4/ORV recreation with rugged terrain and breathtaking views. Many of these areas flow through old ghost towns and historic sites that tell famous pioneering and mining stories of years gone by.
20B lies mainly within BLM, State and private land and a small pocket of the Prescott National Forest is located in the northeast region.
